Dō-maru

The Domaru (Japanese胴 丸) is a Japanese armor type, which was carried by the infantry.

Description

The Domaru was wrapped around the wearer's body and closed on the right side. In contrast to Ōyoroi whose breastplate, left side and back armor were of one piece and separate the right side of it, was the Domaru in one piece. Since the Domaru was mainly carried by foot soldiers of lower ranks, her leg Schurz ( Kusazuri ) is made of eight strips to allow the legs of a high freedom of movement. When Ōyoroi it consists of only four. Due to the lower status of the carrier Domaru was not as lavishly decorated as the Ōyoroi, the only ornament she had mounted on both shoulders metal plates that as Gyōyō (Japanese杏 叶; apricot leaves) were designated.

It was in the mid- Heian period, ie in the 11th century developed. It belongs to the Ōyoroi and Haramaki about the three types of armor of the time and only at the end of the Muromachi period (16th century) was replaced by the Tōseigusoku.
