Do You Really Want to Hurt Me was written by Boy George, Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and Jon Moss, produced by Steve Levine and brought out from the record label Virgin Records in September 1982. In the U.S., Epic Records took over distribution.

Do You Really Want to Hurt Me was the first song by Culture Club, which was released worldwide and helped the band to their commercial breakthrough. The debut single White Boy was released in the UK only. The song Do You Really Want to Hurt Me was first played on radio station BBC Radio 2 in October 1982 and reached the top spot of the UK singles charts. In Germany the song finished for 7 weeks the first place and in early 1983 he came to No. 2 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100

In many countries, the B-side of the song was a dub version of Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, was published while in the United States as a B- side You know I'm Not Crazy. The 12 "single had the additional track Love Is Cold ( You Were Never No Good ).

In the music video Boy George wearing a T- shirt with the Hebrew translation of the band name Culture Club. Instead of Mikey Craig appeared in the music video to his brother Greg.

In summer 2005, a remix of the song was released in France as reggae, which reached number 20 on the charts there.
