Doc Rivers

Glenn Anton " Doc " Rivers ( born October 13, 1961 in Chicago, Illinois ) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. Since 2013 he has been head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. Previously, Rivers had nine years, the Boston Celtics trained and 2008 led to the NBA championship. As a player, was 1.93 m tall point guard from 1983 to 1996 in the NBA active.

Career

As a player

In the National Collegiate Athletic Association Rivers played from 1980 to 1983 for the Golden Eagles of Marquette University. Even before this time he had received from his later college coach nicknamed " Doc", as he was a T- shirt with the inscription " Dr. J " wore. He participated with the U.S. selection of the 1982 World Cup, where he reached the final and was named most valuable player of the tournament. In the 1983 NBA Draft he was selected in the second round by the Atlanta Hawks, for which he was active until 1991. Rivers was for many years part of the root formation, belonged in the seasons 1986/87 and 1987/88 the top five donors pass the NBA and was nominated for the 1988 NBA All- Star Game. After a year with the Los Angeles Clippers Rivers moved in 1992 to the New York Knicks, with whom he celebrated his greatest team success. However, in the 1993/94 season, where the Knicks reached the final, he suffered a serious knee injury and missed much of the season. After two years as a substitute for the San Antonio Spurs Rivers ended his active career in 1996.

As a coach

His first team as head coach Rivers took over in 1999 with the Orlando Magic. He just missed the playoffs and was named coach of the year. In the three following seasons then succeeded each qualifying for the playoffs, but were eliminated in which the Magic every time in the first round. After a start to the season with only one win in eleven games he was released in 2003. In 2004 he took over the Boston Celtics, with whom he again reached the first round. In the following two seasons, he has missed the playoffs with clear Boston. Nevertheless, Rivers remained coach of the Celtics and led the heavily modified for the season 2007/ 08 team to the best record in the regular season and the championship. 2010 succeeded Rivers with the Celtics again the way into the finals series. His sons Jeremiah and Austin Rivers are also basketball player. Austin was selected as the 10th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Hornets.
