Document-oriented database

A document-oriented database is a database in which documents are the basic unit for storing the data. As the most widely used database system also with a document-oriented database Lotus Notes.

While a relational database from database tables is subject to a fixed database schema contains a document-oriented database individual documents. These documents can be structured files using a standard file format (such as a word processor file), as well as Binary Large Objects are possible that are not structured in terms of database access (such as a video in mpeg format).
