Dodge 50 Series

The Dodge 50, and later Renault 50, was a series lighter trucks that Chrysler Dodge Europe produced in the UK under the name. Later Véhicules Industriels Renault took over, once part of the Renault Group, now part of Volvo, the manufacturing. The series was offered in model years 1979 to 1993.

The Series 50, there were a variety of chassis and body combinations - including two completely different cabs - with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 t. to 7.5 t. Various engines were offered, including the Perkins Phaser; There was also a version with all-wheel drive. Stellmacher companies offered a variety of bodies, dump trucks and buses.

Many vehicles were delivered as chassis cabs and then provided with box structures; Such cars were often used by transportation companies in the UK. They, too, were often provided with compressors or generators. Slowly but the popularity of these vehicles abated, particularly because of the unreliability if additional units were connected to the vehicle drive. ( The vehicles themselves had no problems with reliability! ) Transport Companies today prefer smaller cars with attached generators. The all-wheel drive version was often used by the British Army, as this was one of the few in the country produced trucks of this size and it could carry a lot more weapons and equipment than even the largest Land Rover.

Chrysler was supported by the British government, which wanted the ailing British Motor Industry help. Chrysler, however, had his hands full trying to get back on the winning track as they had inherited from the Rootes some problematic car and truck brands ( and factories ), especially Commer and Karrier, plus various French operating parts. In 1978, Chrysler European operations completely and sold it to Peugeot. The cars and vans were sold under the brand name Talbot.

Peugeot but had little interest in the truck and the factory for heavier models was operated together with Renault Véhicules Industriels, who sought a British production site for their own models. It made the 50 series on, as well as the small Dodge (formerly Commerce ) Spacevan and the larger 100 Series During this transition period, there were vehicles that still had the Dodge name, but even the Renault rhombus.

In 1987 the Series 50 was revised and is now uniformly referred to as the Renault 50. The name Dodge, there was no longer in Great Britain. (Chrysler retained its Dodge division in the U.S. and led from 2006 again American Dodge models in Britain ). Renault introduced the Series 50 until 1993 ago, but it was never a big commercial success, in part because they would much rather exported with other Renault products such as the Master, Renault, had to compete.

1994 Renault sold, which now required the factory for a large engine production, the pressing tools for series 50 to a Chinese manufacturer.

Series -50 vehicles can be seen more often on the roads in Great Britain; often they will be provided with a living room or workshop building. Also there are still some as horseboxes and drive a few still in the army. To maintain the vehicles, the owners have to communities of interest together (see links).
