Dodge Ramcharger

The Dodge Ramcharger was a large SUV, the Dodge produced in model years 1974 to 1993. It was built on the shortened chassis of the Dodge Ram. There was a Plymouth version called Plymouth Trail Duster, which was offered from 1974 to 1981 and the only SUV from Plymouth was.

The 1981's Trail Duster corresponded substantially to the Dodge Ramcharger; he differed from the other models in that it was the first had a not to be removed that extend up into the roof tailgate. The Trail Duster had only in model year 1981, this detail; In 1982, he was no longer manufactured.

First series

The Ramcharger was primarily delivered as a two-door car with permanent four-wheel drive; in 1975 it got a rear-wheel drive variant. In the model years 1974 to 1980 manufactured models have a removable roof; there were also fabric canopies. In the first production year of the pillars of the building with the removable roof were connected. The cars were usually powered by a Chrysler LA engine, the most common cubic capacity was 5.2 liters. There was also a 5.9 liter engine and in the early years even the Chrysler RB engine with 7.2 liter displacement.

As a big SUV Ramcharger competed with the Chevrolet Blazer and Ford Bronco. The Ramcharger was sometimes used in rallies. He had some success, for example, he won first place at the Sno * Drift 1975.

Second series

A second series of the Ramcharger was built in Mexico based on the Dodge Ram of the second series in 1999, but not for the U.S. market. However, this model never reached the sales figures from the first series and about 2002 was set. An interesting feature of this series was a small folding seat in the cargo area: he was mounted on the side and not as big as the other seats, which made him uncomfortable for long distances.

The Ramcharger was not sold in the U.S. because Daimler- Chrysler had two mid-size SUVs in the program, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango. On the SUV market were 4 - and 5- door vehicles against 2-door versions preferred. Also, GM introduced its models Tahoe and Yukon in a 2-door version.
