Dog harness

A Harness is a harness for sled dogs by which the applied tensile force is transferred to a pull cord which is fastened together with the pull cords of the other dogs in the team at the Hauptzugleine. This is fixed to the front carriage or training cart.

There are harnesses in different versions. Essential to the harness is that the dog through the dishes in his freedom of movement and breathing little as possible and that the force exerted by the harness on the dog opposing force is distributed as large as possible to prevent rubbing, and the occurrence of pressure sores.

Harnesses usually consist of broad, very high tensile strength tape (approx. 2-4 cm ) made of synthetic fibers. The tapes can be cushioned by fluffy coatings or foam- filled textiles. At the rear end of the Zugeschirrs, approximately at the level of the tail of the dog, a loop for connection with the tug is incorporated. Shorter harnesses that span, for example, only the neck and chest, are not suitable for draft work.

In the selection of harnesses is to pay attention to an individual size adjustment. Harnesses are therefore available in a variety of sizes or made to measure. The head of the dog must just fit through the neck opening. Larger openings mean that the belts slip outside and restrict the shoulder area of the dog. On the side of the thoracic region must be omitted so as not to impede the breathability. The bands must therefore be routed to the rear at the back and below the ribcage.

Harnesses should be on the contact surfaces smooth as possible. Therefore, a padding in the neck area as well as in the whole front part of the harness is recommended. In addition, the material should be as light as possible and absorb little water.
