Dogcart

A Dos -à- dos (pronounced " dos - a-do ") is a car with a back -to-back benches. This seating arrangement, there are at carriages and early automobiles. The term comes from the French and literally means " back to back ".

Advantage over the offered at the same time vis- à-vis arrangement was the location of the aligned in the direction of travel in the front driver's seat of the car. Thus, the passengers were not sitting in front of the driver. When Dos -à- dos it was light, open carriage with four wheels and usually four seats, such as the dog wagon. In the early years of the 20th century, this design came in automobiles out of fashion and, like the Vis - à-vis, replaced by cars that were equipped with a front engine and in which all seats shown in the direction of travel, such as the Tonneau.

As in the 1940s and 1950s came up station wagons, these were often equipped with a retractable, third seat as a rumble seat that was placed opposite to the direction of travel. Thus also a Dos -à -dos- arrangement was found together with the permanently installed rear seat. Especially with French automobile manufacturers, but also at Mercedes- Benz, such vehicles are available today. Such a seating arrangement also had a small car of the 1950s, the Zündapp Janus. A third seat in the rearward direction is still available for the Mercedes E- Class Estate ( wagon), the additional, retractable into the cargo floor seats are only suitable for small people.
