Megalithic grave near Dohnsen / Siddernhausen

The megalithic grave situated on a hill between the villages Dohnsen and Siddernhausen in Bergen ( Landkreis Celle), was originally located 500 meters north. It was excavated in 1977 and rebuilt at its present location again. The megalithic site dating from the Neolithic period was probably destroyed in the 17th or 18th century. Some stones were sunk in the ground, others were taken away. This was a significant part of the former substance is lost.

Description

The excavation revealed that the original 16 -meter-long chamber from 20 to 24 supporting stones and capstones was about eight. She had a rolling stone paving and a side access, so that the plant can be described as a passage grave. The gaps between the hub and shroud stones were sealed with dry masonry of granite. Probably the whole area was originally covered by a mound. This system probably served several generations as a tomb. The dead were laid on the floor of the grave chamber and equipped with its jewelry, pottery and with everyday devices for the life after death.
