The Dokdo class is a type Amphibious assault ships of the South Korean Navy. The project was formerly known as LPX. The construction of the ship ROKS Dokdo type (LPH 6111) was launched by the contracted shipyard Hanjin Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. in Busan on 12 July 2005.

The lead ship was named after the Korean name of the Liancourt Rocks and put into service on 3 July 2007. The first LSF -II, a South Korean LCAC - house development, was driven back in April in the well deck of the ship.

Construction and Technology

The ships of the Dokdo class are the largest of the South Korean Navy and slightly larger than the Spanish aircraft carrier Principe de Asturias (R -11). The ship was designed according to the Over-The- Horizon - concept (OTH ) of the U.S. Navy, that is, heavy equipment is ousted from the beach on the high seas for more than 80 kilometers away and then lands on. This may be equipped with ten helicopters of the type SH-60 Sea Hawk, alternatively ten whiz are (for example, Hawker Siddeley Harrier and Lockheed Martin F -35B ) of allies conceivable, since the deck is designed to the hot jet exhaust of the engines to resist.

In the hull of the ship there are up to 720 marines, ten tanks, ten trucks, seven AAVs, three field guns, ten helicopters, and two LCAC hovercraft boats. For aerial surveillance and close-range defenses are a Smart -L radar from Thales, a RIM -116 Rolling Airframe Missile launchers, and two Goalkeeper systems available.

Units

Four units of the class are planned. The ships are given names of islands.
