When Dr. -Ing. ( Doctor of Engineering ) is the obtained with a doctorate degree of Doctor of Engineering.

The introduction of the Dr. -Ing. took place in 1899 with a diploma degree at the Technical Universities of Prussia on " Most High decree " ( Cabinet Order ) by William II, king of Prussia, on the occasion of the centenary of the Technical University of Berlin on 19 October 1899.

In subsequent years, also took place in other member states of the German Empire, the introduction of the Dr. -Ing.:

  • The Grand Duchy of Hesse -Darmstadt on 25 November 1899
  • The Grand Duchy of Baden on 10 February 1900
  • The Kingdom of Saxony on 12 February 1900
  • In the Kingdom of Württemberg by decree of 22 February 1900
  • The Kingdom of Bavaria on 10 January 1901.

Because of the then opposition of the traditional universities to award doctorates in engineering notation with the dash and in the fracture has been set for the degree, as opposed to the abbreviations of the other " Latin" doctoral degrees in Latin characters without hyphen.
