Dokuchaevsk

Dokutschajiwsk (Ukrainian Докучаївськ; Russian Докучаевск / Dokutschajewsk ) is a city of regional importance in eastern Ukraine with 23,130 inhabitants ( 2013).

In the city there are several caves and a zoo.

Geography

The city is located in the Donets Basin in the Donetsk oblast 38 km south of Donetsk Oblastzentrum. Still belongs to the municipality of the village Jasne (Ukrainian Ясне ).

History

Was founded in 1912 as the place Bergarbeitersiedlung for the workers of the local limestone and dolomite quarries under the name Oleniwski Karjery (Ukrainian Оленівські Кар'єри ). In 1954, the place the status of a town and was renamed after the Russian geologists, mineralogists and geographer Vasily Dokuchaev in Dokutschajiwsk. In 1992 the town was elevated to a city of regional significance.
