Dolný Harmanec

Dolny Harmanec (1927-1957 Slovak " Harmanec "; German Lower Herma network, Hungarian Alsóhermánd ) is a small town in central Slovakia, with 244 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2011). It is located in the northwest of the Okres Banská Bystrica, which belongs to the district Banskobystrický kraj.

Geography

The community is located between the mountains of Velka Fatra mountains in the north and Kremnitz in the south, in the valley of the river Bystrica. Dolny Harmanec is located 13 kilometers from Banská Bystrica and 22 kilometers from Turčianské Teplice.

History

The place was probably in the 14th century as a mining settlement of Banska Bystrica, however, is not mentioned until 1540. The namesake is probably derived from the founder of the settlement Hermann. At this time a hut of Thurzos - Fugger company that processed raw copper was born. This cabin existed until the end of the 18th century. In 1828 the town had 24 houses and 175 inhabitants.

1826 was built at the southern edge of the village, a paper factory. 1883, the place of Horny Harmanec was incorporated, which was inhabited by carbon burners.

In 1957 the area was spun to the paper mill in the new municipality Harmanec and the existing community was named Dolny Harmanec

Attractions

On the way to the saddle Maly Sturec is the Harmanecká Cave, a limestone cave. It is 2763 m long, of which a 720 m long section is set up as a show cave since 1950.
