Dolos

A Dolos (also Doloss, plural Dolosse ) is an unusually shaped concrete block with about 20 tons in weight, is as tetrapods or Quadripoden etc. used as breakwaters for coastal protection. The shape is reminiscent of an anchor. This precast concrete was developed in 1963 in East London, South Africa, under the direction of the harbor engineer Eric Merrifield for a port project. The unique South African design, which is used worldwide, 1975 was registered as a patent. The inventor was awarded for his work.

Projects

End of May 2005, the Coega project in South Africa was completed according to plan. A total of 26,500 Dolosse were made since the beginning of the project in the field factory, while 795,000 tonnes of concrete were used.
