Dóm Square

Dóm tér ( German: Cathedral Square) is a square in the center of Szeged in southern Hungary. It is similar in size exactly to the Piazza San Marco in Venice. Taking place annually since 1931 Szeged Open-Air Festival are listed in the summer on an outdoor stage plays in the context on the court. But also, concerts and other cultural events take place there regularly. The buildings that surround the square are mostly part of the University of Szeged.

Building

Votive Church ( Episcopal Basilica / Church vow )

The basilica was built in the Romanesque Revival style is the fourth largest church in Hungary and offers 5000 square people. It was decided the construction in 1880, a year after devastating floods, but the construction work could be started only in 1913. It was completed in 1930. The Votive Church should protect the city from further flooding after the flood disaster. The bell of the church is the second largest in the country with a weight of 86 cwt. In the sanctuary is a masterful mosaic of the Madonna showing Madonna in fur, in embroidered peasant skirt ( the Szur ) and red Szeged slippers. Left of the altar is the at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 with the Grand Prix excellent statue "Christ on the cross." The scoring with five flaps and 9050 pipes of Europe's largest organ is the center frequently organ concerts.

Demetrius Tower ( Dömötör - torony )

During excavations for the construction of the Votive Church they came upon the octagonal Dömötör - torony ( St. Demetrius Tower ). He is the remnant of the former Church of the Holy Dömötör from the 13th century and the oldest known building Szeged.

Szeged Pantheon

In U- shape around the Votickirche the National Memorial Hall, the Pantheon was built. Here more than 90 of the most famous Hungarian personalities from literature, art and science, business and politics have been immortalized as statues or reliefs.

Musical Clock

At the opposite end of the cathedral designed by students and teachers Szeged musical clock that plays after noon union of the bells of the cathedral clock at 12:15 and 16:15 respectively clock for nine minutes and you can admire the imposing figures of the musical clock.

Greek Orthodox Serbian church

It was built in the years 1773-1778 and, with their Ikonentafelungen to the finest in the country. The Jován of Popovics carved from pear wood iconostasis includes 80 icons.
