Dombay, Karachay-Cherkess Republic

Dombai (Russian Домбай ) is a 657 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) scoring ski resort in the Russian North Caucasus in the Republic of Karachay -Cherkessia.

Geography

Dombai is an urban-type settlement, the administrative city of Karatschajewsk is assumed in the center of the Republic, together with the 20 km northerly town Teberda and two other neighboring towns.

As one of the southernmost places Karachai - Circassia is Dombai located just a few kilometers in a straight line from the border between Russia and Georgia. The so-called Dombaiwiese on which the settlement was built, is a between a number of up to 4000 meters high mountains around 1650 meters above sea level located valley where the two streams Alibek and Dombai - Ulgen in the Amanaus, an influx of Teberda lead. The river Dombai - Ulgen, whose name comes from the Karatschaischen and there means something like " hunted bison " is eponymous for the valley and the village.

History

Dombai was constructed in the early 1920s with the establishment of the first hotels in the high mountain region of the Russian North Caucasus and developed in the Soviet era into a nationally popular resort, which received in 1965 the status of an urban-type settlement.

Economy and Transport

To date, Dombai is mainly known as a winter sports resort in many parts of Russia and the former Soviet Union. Tourism is by far the most important source of income of the few residents Dombais dar. The place has a well developed infrastructure for skiers and snowboarders, consisting of several cable cars and chair lifts, as well as numerous hotels, hostels and restaurants. The latest cable car route, a good 1600 meter long cable car was taken in late 2007 and has its highest mountain station 3200 meters.

Even in summer Dombai and the surrounding mountain region is a tourist attraction, especially due to the delightful mountain landscape with glaciers, streams, waterfalls, mountain lakes and forests. As Hochgebirgsort Dombai is only accessible via the A155 road ended here, connecting the location via Teberda and Karatschajewsk with the Republic capital Tscherkessk. The nearest rail connection is in the city Ust- Dscheguta.
