Domenico di Bartolo

Domenico di Bartolo (actually Domenico Ghezzi, * 1400 in Asciano, † 1445 in Siena) was an Italian painter of the Sienese school.

Life

Domenico di Bartolo Ghezzi was born in Asciano near Sienna and according to Giorgio Vasari's Le vite dei più work was eccellenti architetti, pittori et Scultori italiani a nephew of Taddeo di Bartolo. Here Taddeo di Bartolo also appears as his first teacher. Later he seems to have learned at Vecchietta and helped him in the execution of the work La Cura del Malato in Pellegrinaio Hall of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. First active as a painter he seems to have been in 1420 in the Cathedral of Siena, probably as an apprentice, since it was first listed in 1428 as an independent artist in Siena in the painters' guild. He created the design of the floor sgraffito in the first transept of the Cathedral of Siena, representing the enthroned Emperor Sigismund in December 1434. In March 1435, he painted in the sacristy of the cathedral, on the initiative of Jacopo della Quercia, the frescos Storie dei quattro prottetti di Siena, which, however, remained unfinished. His surname Ghezzi is first mentioned in 1437 in a signed contract from him in Siena. In 1438, he worked in Perugia, where he met Domenico Veneziano. By no later than March 1439 he was back in Siena, where he again worked in the sacristy of the cathedral and this time his work completed ( Storia di San Savino, completed in September 1439).

In 1440 he married Antonia di Pace Pannilini. In the same year he began commissioned by the rector Giovanni Buzzichelli, his work in Pellegrinaio Hall of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, where he was responsible for the main part of the fresco. Here are his major works, in their remarks to him partly Priamo della Quercia helped emerged. To 1444/45 he started in the Palazzo Pubblico in the Sala della Cancelleria di Biccherna in Siena with the redesign of the work Incoronazione Madonna which was painted by Lippo Vanni 1352. This was probably completed due to his death, not by him but by Sano di Pietro.
