Domenico Martinelli

Domenico Martinelli ( born November 30, 1650 in Lucca, † September 11, 1719 ibid. ) Was an Italian architect of the Baroque, in Vienna also worked from 1690 to 1705.

Life

Domenico Martinelli received in Lucca priestly ordination, but also studied the art of drawing and architecture. 1678 he went to Rome to study with Carlo Fontana. For study purposes, he also went to Prague, Warsaw and Holland. He also taught at the Accademia di San Lucca, whose member he was.

1690 he moved to Vienna, brought there by Count Ferdinand Bonaventura Harrach, to build the Palais Harrach ( Freyung ).

His skills also valued other Viennese aristocratic families, especially those of Liechtenstein, but also Andreas Dominik Graf Kaunitz.

He built for Prince Johann Adam Andreas I von Liechtenstein, the Liechtenstein City Palace and the Liechtenstein Garden Palace in Lichtental (now at Vienna - Alsergrund ). The latter originated in a competition among them the young Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Domenico Egidio Rossi. 1692 Martinelli was entrusted with the construction management since its construction corresponded to the more conservative taste of the prince.

For Dominik Graf Kaunitz Andreas he built at Austerlitz (near Brno ) in 1700 a castle. In 1705 he returned to Italy.

He is stylistically as a counterpoint to Fischer von Erlach and Hildebrandt, he took off from their dramatic design and restless manner in favor of a clear and block-like structure. His model was the Roman sculptor - architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini ( 1598-1680 ). He was among other things the " teacher " of the eichstättisch - prince-bishop Hofbaudirektors Gabriel de Gabrieli, who worked in Vienna at a young age with Martinelli.
