Domenico Merlini

Domenico Merlini (Polish: Dominik Merlini ) ( born February 22, 1730 in Castello on Lake Lugano, † February 20, 1797 in Warsaw ) was a Polish- Italian architect of classicism.

Life

From 1750 until his death he lived in Poland, where he was admitted in 1768 to the peerage, and in 1773 was appointed court architect. Meaning he gained with the application of the Royal Baths Park in Warsaw. He built in Warsaw and other Polish cities, numerous public and private buildings, where he often worked with Johann Christian Kamsetzer. His works have their own character, which strongly influenced the city of Warsaw in the period Stanisław August Poniatowski. Its architecture is partially influenced by Andrea Palladio and is characterized by the transition of the late baroque to classicism. That's why he kept in his works with some baroque elements as expressive shapes and colors as well as the abundant use of gold.
