Domenico Michele

Domenico Michiel (also Michele ) was the 35th Doge of Venice. He reigned from 1118 to 1130.

In August 1122 Venetian fleet of 100 ships set sail to transport 15,000 men for the defense of the Holy Lands. The Doge Domenico Michiel took over the leadership of the fleet and sailed under the flag of St. Peter to him by the Pope send. During the winter, Corfu was besieged. The siege, however, was canceled in the spring, when the news came that King Baldwin II of Jerusalem was captured. Before Acre the Venetian fleet defeated the Egyptian fleet. To win, Venice once again received privileged trade concessions and tax exemptions. On the way back under the flag of the Pope they plundered Rhodes, attacked the islands of Samos and Lesbos, Thasos plundered and destroyed the city of Modon in the Peloponnese. Triumphantly the Doge returned in June 1125. To the Christians in the Holy Land he had helped and harmed the warring Greeks. The inscription on his grave describes him not as a religious crusader, but as " terror ... Graecorum ... et laus Venetorum ", as terror of the Greeks ... and praise the Venetians.
