Domenico Monegario

Domenico Monegario was the sixth Doge of Venice. He reigned from 756 to 764

Originally from Malamocco Domenico Monegario was elected with the support of the Lombard king Desiderius Doge. Him were set aside two yearly changing tribunes, who were responsible for relations with the Franks and Byzantium.

From the middle of the 8th century, the Venetians of fishermen is converted to daring traders who took trips to the Ionian Sea and the Levant. Between Venice and Byzantium first regular trade relations developed. In the course of their voyages the ship builders changed the design of the ships, the shape of the sail, oars, etc., to improve the speed and seaworthiness of the fleet. Soon the Venetian merchant fleet was superior to the fleets of other countries bordering the Mediterranean, as well as the nautical knowledge of the Venetians were famous. All this contributed to the growing prosperity of the lagoon Republic, as it caused the envy of competing cities.

Difficult for the Doge was the vacillation between the dominant powers Frankish Empire, Byzantium and the Papacy, which had sought to extend its reach to the north and had all of their partisans in Venice. Following the conflict, the Doge 764 was discontinued. About his future fate and his date of death is not known.
