Domenico Zipoli

Domenico Zipoli S. J. ( Born October 17, 1688 in Prato, † January 2, 1726 in Santa Catalina, in Córdoba ( Argentina) ) was an Italian Baroque composer, organist, and Jesuit missionary.

Life

Zipoli was on 17 (other sources indicate the 16th or 18th at ) born in October 1688 in the Tuscan Prato. There his first music lessons began at the Kapellmeister of the cathedral city. Due to the financial support of Grand Duke Cosimo III. de Medici in 1707, he could continue his studies in Florence. A year later he went to Rome, where he began his studies and later met with Bernardo Pasquini. In the meantime, he stayed briefly in Bologna and Naples, but from where he left due to disagreements with Alessandro Scarlatti. In 1710 he took over the post of organist of Santa Maria in Trastevere. During this time in Rome he composed his first masses and oratorios. In 1716 he published his Sonata d' Intravolatura for organ and harpsichord.

In the same year he became a member of the Jesuit order, his admission motivation was the desire to go as a musician in the Jesuit reductions. He lived for a year in Seville. In April 1717 began his journey to South America, where he arrived three months later and eventually settled in Córdoba. In addition to continuing his theological and philosophical studies, he devoted himself again to continue the music. His compositions obtained under the mission members great fame, contemporary copies can be found in many libraries in Latin America. P. Piotr Nawrot SVD edited in the Archivo Musical de Chiquitos and in the Archivo Musical de Moxos (both in Bolivia) recovered scores, including fairs, hymns and psalm settings. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 37, shortly before receiving ordination.

Works

Domenico Zipoli is mainly known for his organ and harpsichord works. In particular, his vocal works are, however, survives only in fragments.
