Domingos Castro

Domingos Castro ( born November 22, 1963 in Guimarães ) is a former Portuguese athlete. Castro was 1987 vice world champion in 5000 -meter run.

Train

On the railway Castro stepped up to the European Championships in 1986 in Stuttgart in the 10,000 meter run, finishing in fifth place 28:01,62 minutes. With five seconds behind the winner and a half seconds behind the third-placed Castro was already in this first big race of his career that he could run fast times, but was beat in the final sprint. A year later at the 1987 World Championships in Rome took over the Kenyans John Ngugi the tip and the field followed him. At the end of the Kenyans left the forces and the Moroccan Said Aouita won the final sprint, followed in 13:27,59 min Castro back for a second and surprisingly won the silver medal.

In the 5000 -meter final of the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988, John Ngugi decided early on the field, Castro succeeded him as the only one, while the rest of the field did not interfere the two. With two laps to Ngugi replaced by Castro and from the chasing pack, the two German Dieter Baumann ( West) and Hansjörg Kunze (East) gave chase. While Ngugi certainly won gold, Castro was caught up in the final meters of Baumann and Kunze, 0.36 seconds behind Kunze Castro occupied the fourth place, seven seconds ahead of the fifth-placed.
