Domingos Leite Pereira

Domingos Leite Pereira ( born September 19, 1882 in Braga, † October 27, 1956 in Porto ) was a Portuguese Catholic priest and politician. He was a total of three times ( 30 March-30 June 1919 21 January to 8 March 1920 and 1 August to 18 December 1925) Prime Minister of his country. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Life

Domingos Leite Pereira studied theology and literature at the University of Coimbra. As a Catholic priest, he helped greatly improve the dysfunctional relationship between Church and State in Portugal during the first republic.

After the proclamation of the Republic ( 1910), he was president of the local Parliament in Braga and a deputy in the Constituent Assembly. Later he became President of the Portuguese Parliament. In the government José Relvas he was Minister of Education. Following the resignation of Relvas he himself was the first time Prime Minister. In addition to his three terms as Prime Minister, he also worked in five different governments as foreign minister. After the coup of 1926, which ended democracy in Portugal and during the years of the Salazar dictatorship, he retired from politics and was until his death as head of the Douro life insurance operates.
