Dominic Ekandem

Dominic Cardinal Ignatius Ekandem ( * 1917 in Obio Ibiono, Nigeria, † November 24, 1995 in Abuja ) was Archbishop of Abuja.

Life

Dominic Ignatius Ekandem received after his training in Onitsha, Enugu and Calabar Okpala on 7 December 1947, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked as rector of the minor seminary of Calabar and as a church pastor before he was appointed on 7 August 1953 Titular Bishop of Hierapolis in Isauria and Auxiliary Bishop of Calabar. He received his episcopal consecration of the Bishop of Calabar, James Moynagh PLC, on 7 February 1954. Were co-consecrators the Apostolic Vicar of Brazzaville, Paul Joseph Biéchy CSSp, and the Bishop of Buéa, Peter Rogan MHM.

In the years 1962-1965 Ekandem took part in the Second Vatican Council.

Pope John XXIII. appointed him on March 1, 1963, Ikot Ekpene Bishop of; Pope Paul VI. took Dominic Ignatius Ekandem on 24 May 1976 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marcello in the College of Cardinals to. Pope John Paul II appointed him in 1989 as Bishop of Abuja and granted him the personal title of archbishop. In 1992, Dominic Ignatius Ekandem the management of the diocese for reasons of age. He died on 24 November 1995 in Abuja.
