Course of the Dommel

The Dommel in Sint- Michielsgestel

The Dommel is - including the 6.5 km long opening section Dieze - a 120 km long left tributary of the Meuse in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Course

The source of the Dommel is located south of the Belgian town of peer in heath and moorland of Donderslagse Heath. About Overpelt and Neerpelt the Dommel reached the Dutch border at Valkenswaard. In Eindhoven the Dommel flows through the city center and crosses under soon after the Wilhelminakanal in Son en Breugel. In Boxtel the Dommel is channeled on the eastern outskirts past. Only a small part of the water remains in the previous tortuous bed through the city. In the city of 's- Hertogenbosch, the Aa (4.6 m³ / s) and the channel Zuid- Willemsvaart flow into the Dommel, which has thus far achieved an average discharge of about 14 m³ / s. From this point on, the flow is called Dieze. 6.5 km, the river continues to flow into the Meuse ( about 22 m³ / s).

Name

At the time of the Romans, who ruled the southern part of Belgium and the Netherlands, the river Dutmala was called, hence the name Dommel has developed.
