As Peppone and the other comrades want to go to the celebrations on the other side of the Iron Curtain, Don Camillo wants to join them. He achieves this by threatening otherwise to make an escapade of the mayor publicly. Don Camillo obtains false papers, he is the comrade Tarocci. Just a traveling journalist you can about the true identity of the " priest -eater " in the dark. In Russia, events are scheduled to cultural exchange: ballet, opera, a fishing contest and various festivals.

Shortly after the Italian delegation has arrived in Russia, it comes to the fall of Khrushchev and the group is detained without explanation at the hotel. The villagers are worried about the political situation and even think of escape, after they have divided their brought gifts ( Italian wine and cheese) among themselves. Fortunately, however, everything changes for the good and the " Italian comrades " are treated friendly again.

Brusco has a missing brother in the war, of which he is ashamed, because of the Fascists belonged at that time, while Brusco is a flaming communist. However, he has promised his old mother to light a candle on the grave of the fallen brother. Don Camillo is help him to find the place.

The priest of the Russian village lives in the underground because he is afraid of the local mayor, a Erzkommunisten who has the church converted into a granary. Don Camillo convinced him to accept the confession of the mother of the mayor and to baptize his numerous children. He also trained the priests still in fist fight, so that it can meet in the future the mayor at the same height.

The mitgereiste journalist begins an affair with the pretty Russian interpreter Nadja. On the last night of their stay but Don Camillo prevents the carnal consummation of the relationship, which moves the reporter at the last moment to not stay with the other fly back, but when the girl he wants to marry and then take to Italy.

To prevent the Russian mayor from going ahead after the opera home ( and there to surprise Don Camillo and the Russian priests in their religious activities ), Peppone challenges him to a vodka - drinking contest on: Although Peppone remains the victor, but has so drank a lot that he's bad, and a doctor must be called. The tablet gives him and lets him sign a delivery request for the hospital. Peppone coat a great sadness that he would not " away from home like a dog to be left alone to die " and swallows the whole box of tablets. The next day you prepare for return to Italy. Peppone but held back from the doctor, the ambulance for him has arrived. While protests Peppone, but it keeps him the signed request before so he can deliver reluctantly.

During the ambulance leaves, Don Camillo makes a funny Russian officials, in faith, the person understands nothing. However, this responds in perfect Italian: " Father, our intelligence service is the best around the world: We already knew since you left, who you are. But we have before anyone secrets. Tell the Pope said. Tell him that it is not so bad with us. Tell him to visit us. Have a good trip! ". Don Camillo is equally shocked as flabbergasted and makes his way to the aircraft. So the group without Peppone and the journalists returned to Italy.

Weeks go by and take a postcard from Russia Peppone. He received a blood purification, new teeth and other medical treatments. Then have your Postcards come more and Peppone track is lost. Finally, the Bishop Don Camillo chooses to lead a church delegation to the United States. To Camillo surprise Peppone also belongs to this group, disguised as a Monsignor with false papers and without his mustache. Peppone is also well equipped for a trip with priests: Under a cover of the breviary he leads the writings of Karl Marx to himself as Don Camillo earlier camouflaged in the breviary of the Soviet Union under Lenin cover had with him. Don Camillo asks him how he was going to convince him to take him and not to betray. Peppone shows him a captured Russian photo showing him with a hammer and sickle as a pin while being kissed by an attractive Russian girl on the mouth. " What would tell the bishop about this photo? " Asks Peppone. Don Camillo gives in and takes Peppone with.

At the end of Don Camillo meet ( disguised as a priest) at the airport, where just the journalist and Nadja are newly married come back from Russia and quite shocked when they see the two "communists" in Priesterornat.

The film shows in a special way Guareschi attitude that was at the time of his life staunch anti-Communist, but his critique of Marxism always chose the path of subtle satire. The Soviet Union is not here portrayed as the "evil empire ", but as a country like any other. In this sense, the last sentence of Russian officials can be considered at the end of the film it as the outcome.
