Don Maloney

Donald Michael " Slip" Maloney ( born September 5, 1958 in Lindsay, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who played Islanders during his playing career in the National Hockey League for the New York Rangers, Hartford Whalers and New York. Since 29 May 2007, he is general manager of the Phoenix Coyotes.

Career

As a player

The Canadian began his career in 1974 at the Kitchener Green Shirts and then went from 1974 to 1978 for the Kitchener Rangers in the OMJHL on the ice. During this time, he was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1978 in the second round by a total of 26 position of the New York Rangers. At the beginning of the 1978/79 season Maloney was in the squad of the New Haven Nighthawks, the former farm team of the Rangers in the American Hockey League. During the same season he was called to consistent performances in the NHL squad of Rangers and then continuously used as a regular player in the National Hockey League. Maloney qualified with the Rangers for the play- offs and defeated in the first two rounds of the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers. After his expiring contract was not renewed, he signed on 25 August 1989 as a free agent contract with the New York Islanders. Maloney was two years with the Islanders under contract and could rely to qualify with the team again for the final round. After the season 1990/91, in which he played twelve NHL games and recorded five points, he finally ended his active career.

Internationally

Maloney represented his country at the World Championships in 1985, when he finished with the Canadian national team in the tournament in second place. During his eight stakes tournament he scored two points.

As a manager

After end of his career as an active hockey player Maloney began a career as a hockey official. On the first stop, he took over from 1992 to 1995 the office of the General Manager of the New York Islanders. During the 1995/96 season he was replaced by Mike Milbury. First, he moved in 1996 for one year to the San Jose Sharks and then the New York Rangers. There took over the post of vice - president and assistant general manager Glen Sather. On 29 May 2007 he was appointed as the successor to Michael Barnett General Manager of the Phoenix Coyotes. After the team in the first two seasons a place in the play-offs failed, succeeded in the 2009/10 season with a franchise record of 107 points to qualify for the finals. Although the team in the first round in seven games, losing to the Detroit Red Wings, he was awarded as the best General Manager of the Year. Maloney received on 2 June 2010 the NHL General Manager of the Year Award, which was first awarded in 2010.
