Don Perkins

Donald Anthony Perkins ( born March 4, 1938 in Waterloo, Iowa, United States) is an American former American football player. He played running back in the National Football League ( NFL).

Career

Perkins played 1957-1959 American football at the University of New Mexico at the New Mexico Lobos. Even in college, he drew attention to himself and was voted best newcomer in the league. Three times he made it also in the national team in the league. In 1960, he was drawn by the Baltimore Colts in the ninth round at 106th in the NFL Draft in 1960, but never served for the team from Baltimore. Shortly before the founding of the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas Perkins had signed a contract. Against the Colts waived compensation to him, Perkins was able to play for the Cowboys. From 1961 to 1968 he latched on to 6217 yards for the Cowboys. In the record list of the cowboys he thus ranks behind Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett. Get him 42 touchdowns passes and three touchdowns by pass catches. In 1967 he succeeded with his team of entry into the NFL Championship Game. In the so-called Ice Bowl, however, you had to admit defeat in the final of the Green Bay Packers at 21:17. Perkins, except as halfback came as a fullback during his career for use, finished his career in 1968.

Honors

Perkins played six times in the Pro Bowl, the final game of the best players of the season. He was again elected to the All- Pro. In 1961, he won election to the NFL Rookie of the Year. Perkins is immortalized on the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor. Since 2006 he is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame
