Don Rodrigo

Don Rodrigo is a tragic opera by Alberto Ginastera. The opera has three acts and nine scenes ( Opus 31), each scene is separated by an orchestral interlude. The premiere took place on July 24, 1964 at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires instead. The opera is based on a Spanish libretto by Alejandro Casona.

Description of the work

The text of the opera is highly compressed, and the overall concept of the opera is actually atonal. The impressive to Don Rodrigo is the compositional security, with the Ginastera explores the strengths and weaknesses of singers and orchestra.

The opera is designed as a colorful spectacle, and provides a parade of the Visigoth King Roderick ( Rodrigo ) of Toledo in the 8th century Represent sounds less like a classic opera, because it lacks melodic verve and ingenuity, the opera lives of their well-organized and symmetrical musical structure. The characters are shown only little emotional, the music is not able to support the emotions of the protagonists, so the opera lives mostly from their brilliant musical effects. The people involved are only shown and not explained; their actions are not made clear by the music. So the people remain so strange, since a musical description of their feelings is missing. A performance of Don Rodrigo, therefore, does not live on the emotions and the action but on the quality and strength of the singers, the orchestra, and the staging.
