Don Sebesky

Donald J. Sebesky ( born December 10, 1937 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey) is an American jazz musician ( arranger, trombone ) and composer.

Life and work

Sebesky first played in the big band of Tommy Dorsey, which was continued by Warren Covington, with whom he had trombone lessons for three years. In addition to studying composition at the Manhattan School of Music, he played with Claude Thornhill, Kai Winding, Maynard Ferguson and Stan Kenton. 1960 Sebesky decided to abandon the active games and focused on the work as an arranger, where he was active among other things for Ferguson, Carmen McRae, Wes Montgomery, Buddy Rich, Hubert Laws, Freddie Hubbard, Roberta Flack, Ron Carter. In 1975 he published his textbook " The Contemporary Arranger". In 1979 he presented his symphonic composition "Three Works for Jazz Soloists and Symphony Orchestra. In other Sebesky wrote film scores. He played an even albums under his own name, such as " Full Circle " (1984 ) and " Our Love Is Here To Stay " (1999).

In 2000 he won with his Joyfull Noise Suite a Grammy for "Best Instrumental Composition in Jazz". In 1999 he received a Grammy for his arrangement of Bill Evans composition " Waltz for Debby ".
