Don Sickler

Don Sickler ( born January 6, 1944 in Spokane ) is an American jazz trumpeter, arranger, music publisher and producer.

Life and work

Sickler learned from the age of four when his mother, a theater musician, piano. At age ten, he began with the trumpet and played with twelve years in a Dixieland band that was quite successful soon. He studied trumpet with Donald Byrd and arranging with Russ Garcia, then to complete his bachelor's degree from Gonzaga University in his hometown. In 1967 he moved to New York City, where he continued trained at the Manhattan School of Music and performed in the Broadway theaters. In the seventies he worked in music publishing, such as EB Marks as responsible editor, before he founded his own jazz publishers. In the late 1970s he played next with Philly Joe Jones to start in the 1980s, the tribute band Dameronia, which was dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron. In 1986 and 1987 he headed the Thelonious Monk Orchestra Reunion. In the same year he guested with its own quartet in Paris, and then to set up Super Blue. In another tribute band, Birdology, he worked with Jackie McLean and Johnny Griffin. As a musician, he recorded with Clifford Jordan, Cedar Walton and Jimmy Gourley.

As a producer he worked for Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Larry Coryell, Wallace Roney, Donald Brown and especially for Joe Henderson; four of the albums with Henderson were awarded a Grammy. More than 300 of his arrangements have been recorded by musicians such as Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw.
