Donald Griffin

Donald Redfield Griffin ( August 3, 1915 *; † 7 November 2003) was an American zoologist.

Griffin was professor of zoology at several universities and provided pioneering contributions in the fields of behavioral science, the navigation of animals, especially the acoustic orientation of bats, as well as the sensor biophysics.

In 1944, he coined the term echolocation ( echolocation ).
