Dondo

Province

Dondo is a city in Mozambique in the province of Sofala.

Geography

Dondo is located about 20 kilometers north-northwest of the provincial capital, Beira, about 10 kilometers west of the city flows the Pungwe. Since 1998 Dondo is a municipality with 382 382 square kilometers. In addition, it is the administrative center of the district.

Population

The city had in 2009 according to an estimate 78 639 inhabitants. In 1997 we counted 71 644 people, but the population decreased to an estimated 61,000 in 2003.

History

On 24 July 1986 Dondo received city rights.

Policy

President of the City Council ( Conselho Municipal) is Manuel Cambezo (Stand: 2009, 2012).

Economy and infrastructure

In Dondo is the cement plant of Cimentos de Mozambique, the limestone from Muanza used. The lobby also houses one of the two factories in Mozambique for railway sleepers. The other is located further north in Vila de Sena.

Dondo has a train station. This is where the route to Malawi and Moatize on the route to Zimbabwe.
