Doniphan County, Kansas

Doniphan County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Troy. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme northeast of Kansas, on the east by Missouri, on the north by Nebraska, where the boundary is formed by both the Missouri River and has an area of 1028 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Atchison County and Brown County.

History

Doniphan County was formed on 30 August 1855 as original county of free territory and is one of the first 33 counties that were formed by the first territorial administration. From 18 September of the same year it had its own administration. It was named after Alexander W. Doniphan, who played a major role in the Mexican-American War.

  • The Native American Heritage Museum, 3 km east of Highland, is an original preserved Presbyterian mission from 1845, where earlier Indian children from Iowa and Missouri were taught.
