Donny McCaslin

Donny McCaslin ( Donald Paul McCaslin, born August 11, 1966 in Santa Cruz / California) is an American jazz saxophonist.

Life and work

McCaslin was introduced by his father to jazz music, which was an English teacher and as a jazz vibraphonist led group. At the age of twelve years he has performed with his father's band, and in his high school, he led his own band already. He also played in an eight-piece salsa band and studied in Kuumbwa Jazz Center. Among his teachers were Paul Contos and Brad Hecht.

He toured with a youth ensemble through Europe and Japan, and in 1984 he received a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music. Here he became a member of the quintet from Gary Burton, with whom he toured four years through Europe, Japan, North and South America.

In 1991 he settled in New York and was a member of the group Steps Ahead, where he remained for three years. He also worked with the Gil Evans Orchestra, George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, the quintet of Danilo Perez, Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and the Santi DeBrianos Panamaniacs.

In 1997, McCaslin with Dave Binney, Scott Colley and Kenny Wollesen the experimental group Lan Xan emerged with two albums. In 1998, he released his first album as a leader. In 2011 he worked at Ryan True Dells Centennial - with Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans. 2013 he was with private quartet concerts in Germany.
