Donovan
Donovan ( born May 10, 1946 in Glasgow, Scotland as Donovan Phillips Leitch ) is a British singer- songwriter, guitarist and composer initially in particular in the field of folk music; and later included influences of rock, pop, psychedelic rock music and jazz.
Life
Donovan had to have his first success in 1964 published in the TV show " Ready Steady Go" without a plate. He had his first hit in 1965 with the folk ballad Catch the wind, the Reinhard Mey recorded under the pseudonym Rainer May as " Go and catch the wind." The single reached the third place in the UK Singles Chart. Other successes of 1965 brought the song Colours, Turquoise and The Universal Soldier, and the last was originally developed by the Canadian folk singer Buffy Sainte -Marie.
Influenced by Bob Dylan - initially he was sometimes referred to as Dylan impersonator - and from the British folk scene to guitarists such as Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, Donovan initially played almost exclusively acoustic folk; In 1966 he expanded his musical range by he incorporated rock elements into his own compositions. Artistic result of this development are Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow, Hurdy Gurdy Man Hey Gyp and. In various music productions Donovan had two subsequent members of Led Zeppelin formation, founded in 1969, namely with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, as arrangers and studio musicians. One of Donovan's most famous songs is to be the folk ballad Atlantis from 1969, which for the 2001 Walt Disney film Atlantis - The Lost Empire was re-recorded by the No Angels and finished fifth in the German charts.
1968 Donovan went along with The Beatles to Rishikesh (India ), where he participated in a multi-week meditation course the guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In 1969, he took along with the Jeff Beck Group on the studio album Barabajagal and played the following year on the Isle of Wight Festival.
Subsequently, Donovan went on his back from the pop business. Above all, he reduced his concert tour activity. 2002 Donovan had a guest appearance in the episode Deep in the south of the science fiction cartoon series Futurama.
In 2003 he received an honorary Doctor Doctor Of Letters of the University of Hertfordshire. He was nominated among other things, Mac MacLeod, his old friend and mentor. Donovan started in 2007 in Scotland planning a inspired by Maharishi University: " The Invincible Donovan University ", in the Transcendental Meditation ( TM) should be a mandatory component of otherwise conventional curricula. He was supported in this project by film director David Lynch.
In 2009 he was honored by the French Government with the Order of Arts and Literature.
2011 his play Sunshine Superman theme song of the eBay commercials was my One for All.
Donovan now lives with his wife Linda in Ireland. With Linda, he has the common daughters Astrella and Oriole. From the relation Donovan with the photo model Enid Karl Donovan Leitch children and Ione Skye come.
Reception
The song Atlantis was in Fringe Episode 9 of the 5th Season ( while Walters LSD dream ) to hear in the movies Goodfellas 1990 The Girl Next Door 2004 and 2010. In 2001, the piece Hurdy Gurdy Man was the title song for the film LIE - Long Iceland Expressway, in 2007 the same song was as the title soundtrack of David Fincher - movie Zodiac - used the track of the killer.
Social Commitment
- Appearance at the benefit concert "Change Begins Within" the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness - Based Education and World Peace on 4 April 2009 at Radio City Music Hall, New York City, including with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper, Eddie Vedder and Moby. With the concert revenue, the Foundation wants to give underprivileged children the opportunity to learn Transcendental Meditation.
