The area around Donzdorf was settled very early. 1964 an old cemetery Alemanni was exposed. We counted more than 100 graves from the period between 600 and 700 AD in a woman's grave is found valuable grave goods, indicating the one to trade with Northern Europe and to a Alamannic seat of power.

In 1275 Donzdorf was first mentioned in the tenth control list of the diocese of Constance. In this document, however, the then parish was still called Tunes village. In the nachstaufischen time a power struggle for Donzdorf, the finally Rechenberg could decide for themselves developed between the counts of Helfenstein and the Lords of Rechenberg. From Sharp castle, they determined the fate of the village.

The economic situation of the village developed in the 15th century well. The need for Donzdorf sandstone was great. In addition to many sites in the vicinity even the Ulmer Münster construction site was extensively with this particular Donzdorf stone, which was resistant easy to work with and yet due to its high iron content, delivered.

To 1478, the Lords of Rechenberg built an imposing building in the town, probably served as its management. A short time later they began construction of the Gothic church of St. Martin. The patronage of Lord let this make an altar of the famous Ulmer artist Bartholomäus Zeitblom whose boards are to be seen today in the Würth Collection in the Johanniterkirche Schwäbisch Hall.

In 1568 Hans von Rechenberg built today Donzdorf castle in Renaissance style. From that time the village has grown into a Residenzort with a differentiated craft. In the first half of the 18th century Donzdorf was only a secondary residence and was even sold in 1735 to the Duchy of Württemberg. In 1745 bought Maria Theresia von Rechenberg of Württemberg proportion of Donzdorf with the lock back and sat up here with their children. My son built from 1768 Donzdorf Castle to his main residence and was put on the Baroque castle gardens in the French style.

With the mediatization of the kingdom manors in 1803 Donzdorf fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria. In this case, the then son of the rule owner and senior Bavarian diplomat, Aloys von Rechenberg, exhausted all its possibilities to achieve this result.

Only with the border treaty of 1810 between the Kingdom of Württemberg and Bavaria Donzdorf finally fell to Württemberg.

On 1 May 1976, the municipality Donzdorf was given city rights. After the incorporation of Reichenbach in Rechenberg and Winzingen Donzdorf had the pre-requisite for a city population of over ten thousand inhabitants.

Natural stone

An art-historically significant rock deposits, the Donzdorf sandstone is named after the place Donzdorf. Many buildings in and around Donzdorf and beyond are built in Baden- Württemberg from this sandstone. In Ulmer Münster consist, for example, the cross ribs in the nave, the window frames and the wall of the nave towards the choir from Donzdorf sandstone. Its golden yellow color gives even on cloudy days the illusion of sunshine and bright light in the church. The building material was degraded below the striking Messel mountain at the former Berghof.

But the Donzdorf sandstone served yet another purpose. When, after the end of the Spanish Succession War, the population of the rule Donzdorf was completely depleted, the rule owner, Count Franz Albrecht von Rechenberg approved the project of his senior bailiff Johann Benedict Jehlin to build a furnace between Donzdorf and lower alarm setting in Simonsbachtal. Jehlin had several opinions on the Donzdorf iron sandstone obtained, which certified him an iron content of 35 to 42% and its quality einstuften higher than that of Wasseralfingen.

Jehlin planned and carefully calculated its smelter: he built a first dam on Simon Bach, was followed by charcoal burning, the stamps and the melt. The coal and the necessary timber was imported. A total of 80 persons found work in this work. After initially notable successes, the problems of this plant showed very quickly. Jehlin has had too little capital and therefore need to absorb large amounts of money. The mid- 1730s, the company eventually went bankrupt. Jehlin was captured and convicted.

Nevertheless, this furnace has its own historical value - it is the oldest early industrial enterprises in the district of Göppingen. The furnace was converted after his economic decline in a farmstead, the house called ' furnace ' bears today.
