In the 21st century locates a group of scientists under the direction of Jason Webb erdgleichen a planet that moves as the earth at the same distance to the sun. This previously unknown planet is just on the other side of the sun. Together with NASA prepares Webb before a mission to the new planet.

The veteran U.S. astronaut Glenn Ross and British astrophysicist John Kane are to make the trip and explore the planet. For the flight of their body functions are slowed down. After three weeks of flight, the planet is reached. Kane and Ross are taken out of their " space sleep." You go on board a landing capsule with which they planned to venture to the surface. In the atmosphere, however, the capsule spins out of control and crashes. Kane is thrown out of the lander and freed Ross from the burning wreck. A figure in a space suit brings them to a floating ship.

When they are taken to a space station, the two believe that they are somehow returned to Earth. Kane succumbs there but his injuries he has sustained in the crash landing. Ross faces serious allegations on the part of officials suspended. Man charged him at the failure of the exploration mission. Ross, the allegations on the ground, Kane and he reached the new planet, but could not explain how they had come back again.

With time, however Ross is clear that he is on the new planet. His apartment is exactly mirrored set. Furthermore, documents and newspapers are written in mirror writing. However, his wife Sharon and his colleagues did not believe him and think he's crazy. But Ross can convince them of his theory Webb. X-rays show that his internal organs are also mirrored in the body. Ross believes that everything happens at the same time, so that the horse, who started from the new planet, now has the same problems on the earth as it now here.

Ross is to return to Earth. A shuttle will bring him to his mother ship still in orbit. Difficulties arise when scientists fear that the electric poles behave as a mirror image, like everything else. But one dares risk and builds the shuttle, which is given the name " Double". Ross starts and docks to his mother ship. The fear of the scientists on the mirror-inverted polarity true. Ross loses radio contact with the control station, his shuttle coasts into the atmosphere. Since the shuttle is equipped with an automatic landing system, Ross can no longer control the shuttle. The shuttle crashes and destroys the entire system. Ross and everyone else, with the exception of Webb, are killed. Since all documents are destroyed in the process, Webb is later paid no faith.

In the last scene we see an aged, wheelchair-bound Jason Webb in a sanatorium. His confused mind constantly dangles him before the old incidents. When he sees his reflection at the end of a corridor, he tries to touch it. He moves towards the mirror and presumably dies in the collision.
