The crater is flooded by lavas of Mare, whereby the northeastern part has almost completely disappeared. From inside rises to a central peak, which is surrounded by concentric structures.

The system of grooves Rimae Doppelmayer begins west of the crater, runs parallel to the edge of the Mare Humorum to the north and north-east ends of Liebig F.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 by the German astronomer Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr.
