Dorchester County (Maryland)
The Dorchester County is a county located in the U.S. state of Maryland. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Cambridge.
Partners circle is since 6 June 2005, the district of Düren, North Rhine -Westphalia. The partnership was initiated by the company GKD brothers Kufferath, which maintains a branch in the U.S. County.
Geography
The County is located on the Delmarva Peninsula on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay and is bordered to the northeast by Delaware. It has an area of 2546 square kilometers, of which 1102 square miles are water. Adjacent counties are:
History
The Dorchester County was formed in 1668 to then disorganized designated as Indian land. It was named after Edward Sackville, 4th Earl of Dorset, an English nobleman.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000, lived in Dorchester County 30 674 people in 12,706 households and 8,500 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.4 percent white, 28.4 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.7 percent Asian and 0.4 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.3 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,706 households out of which 27.3 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.5 percent were married couples living together, 15.5 percent were single mothers and 33.1 percent were non-families. 13.3 percent of all households were single-person households and 5.2 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size is 2.86 people.
23.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.7 percent between 18 to 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 years old and 17.7 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.8 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males.
The average income of a household was $ 34,077, for a family is $ 41,917. Males had a median income of $ 29,014, women $ 22,284. The per capita income was $ 18,929. Approximately 10.1 percent of families and 13.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
Economy
Since the County is surrounded by water, here fishing and oyster farming is operated. Tourism is under construction.
