Dorint Hotel Tower

The Augsburg Hotel Tower is the most famous skyscraper in Augsburg. The building is the tallest structure in the Augsburg area and one of the ten tallest buildings in Bavaria.

The 115 m (with antenna 158 meters ) tall tower located in the district Antonsviertel at the intersection Gögginger road and Imhofstraße. In its immediate neighborhood are the Congress Hall and the Wittelsbach Park.

The plan has reinforced concrete construction, the Augsburg architects " Brockel and Miller." At the start he was regarded as the largest European hotel construction.

A local nickname for the hotel tower is " corncob ", in reference to its cylindrical shape with bulges.

The emergence

The former Augsburg agricultural machinery dealers and "Holiday Inn" Franchisee Otto Schnitzenbaumer let for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 built the tower for 50 million D- Mark and thus fulfilled a wish: a " symbol of the modern Augsburg ."

The planning for the project came up fast resistance among citizens. They worried about the silhouette of the town and had concerns about the necessary transformation of the Wittelsbach Park, one of the largest green areas of Augsburg. Times of crisis

In 1974, the surprising message that the building was sold to the Luxembourg holding company of Johann Nepomuk Glöggler. The contract of sale but was revoked in February 1976 because of the unpaid purchase price and the building went back to his old owners.

However, since Otto Schnitzenbaumer had financial problems, the tower was in 1979 advertised for 35 million D- Mark to foreclosure. However, found himself at this price an acquirer. In April 1989, the Group acquired Swiss " Toga Hotels " the hotel wing, whose lease with "Holiday Inn" a year later expired. Swiss operator Martin Zoller ran the hotel under the name " Tower Hotel " on, but had to file for bankruptcy in March 1993. The 303 beds were in receivership, which suggested a further use as an asylum seeker or retirement home. As the city struggled violently against these plans, they were again discarded and the 185 hotel rooms remained unused. Part of the rooms in the 13th and 30th floor was used between 1994 and 1997 as assisted living for young people, but this was abandoned for cost reasons.

On 8 May 1996, the hotel wing moved to receivership and auction, in turn, the owner and went for 20.9 million D- Mark at the " First National Holding Venezuela," the oil company Hertel, for the 7.2 million D- Mark, a three -star wanted to build automata hotel called " Good Night ". The Rebirth

In January 2000, came to the apartment owners, who had to bear the additional costs of the Hotel tract so far, the redemption: the Cologne entrepreneur Herbert Ebertz, former Chairman of Dorint AG, bought for 12 million marks the hotel wing. After seven years of peace 70 million D- Mark now been invested in a complete renovation of the hotel area. On 1 August 2001, the 4-star Hotel Dorint was able to open with 184 rooms and 315 beds, thus creating 50 new jobs. It is named after the Maritim Hotel Ulm with 287 rooms and 550 beds, the largest hotel between Munich and Stuttgart. The hotel tower has has a rooftop antenna mast from which are radiated on behalf of Media Broadcast FM broadcast and digital radio (DAB and DAB ).
