Dorint Hotel Tower

The Augsburg Hotel Tower is the most famous skyscraper in Augsburg. The building is the tallest structure in the Augsburg area and one of the ten tallest buildings in Bavaria.

The 115 m (with antenna 158 meters ) tall tower located in the district Antonsviertel at the intersection Gögginger road and Imhofstraße. In its immediate neighborhood are the Congress Hall and the Wittelsbach Park.

The plan has reinforced concrete construction, the Augsburg architects " Brockel and Miller." At the start he was regarded as the largest European hotel construction.

A local nickname for the hotel tower is " corncob ", in reference to its cylindrical shape with bulges.

Architectural similarity has the Tower with the designed by Bertrand Goldberg in 1964 and completed twin towers of Marina City in Chicago. There include the first 19 floors in both towers a spiral parking garage.

The emergence

The former Augsburg agricultural machinery dealers and "Holiday Inn" Franchisee Otto Schnitzenbaumer let for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 built the tower for 50 million D- Mark and thus fulfilled a wish: a " symbol of the modern Augsburg ."

The planning for the project came up fast resistance among citizens. They worried about the silhouette of the town and had concerns about the necessary transformation of the Wittelsbach Park, one of the largest green areas of Augsburg. This led, among other things, establishing a citizens' initiative "Save the Wittelsbach Park".

Construction began in April 1971. In order to meet the planned construction period, the internal 18-sided, which contains the elevators and stairwells, performed in -situ concrete, precast concrete parts for the balconies and ceiling were made in a site specially constructed plant was.

After fourteen months of construction adopted on 2 July 1972, the 400 - bed hotel, Holiday Inn, the first guests on the overlying 279 apartments were offered as well and the restaurant on the 35th and the observation deck on the 34th floor were very popular.

Times of crisis

In 1974, the surprising message that the building was sold to the Luxembourg holding company of Johann Nepomuk Glöggler. The contract of sale but was revoked in February 1976 because of the unpaid purchase price and the building went back to his old owners.

However, since Otto Schnitzenbaumer had financial problems, the tower was in 1979 advertised for 35 million D- Mark to foreclosure. However, found himself at this price an acquirer. In the second attempt, on 5 March 1980, the former Landesbank Hessen acquired the contract for the property for 20 million D-Mark. This wanted to sell the building, lack of prospects, the tower was sold but divided into 328 ownership units.

The hotel portion of the tower with a restaurant, consisting of the lower eleven, and the top two floors and parking deck, went to the Fürth-based entrepreneur Franz Lauer.

In April 1989, the Group acquired Swiss " Toga Hotels " the hotel wing, whose lease with "Holiday Inn" a year later expired. Swiss operator Martin Zoller ran the hotel under the name " Tower Hotel " on, but had to file for bankruptcy in March 1993. The 303 beds were in receivership, which suggested a further use as an asylum seeker or retirement home. As the city struggled violently against these plans, they were again discarded and the 185 hotel rooms remained unused. Part of the rooms in the 13th and 30th floor was used between 1994 and 1997 as assisted living for young people, but this was abandoned for cost reasons.

On 8 May 1996, the hotel wing moved to receivership and auction, in turn, the owner and went for 20.9 million D- Mark at the " First National Holding Venezuela," the oil company Hertel, for the 7.2 million D- Mark, a three -star wanted to build automata hotel called " Good Night ". The hotel should have 108 rooms, for a further seven floors a use was intended as a home for the elderly and disabled, but it happened for years nothing.

The Rebirth

In January 2000, came to the apartment owners, who had to bear the additional costs of the Hotel tract so far, the redemption: the Cologne entrepreneur Herbert Ebertz, former Chairman of Dorint AG, bought for 12 million marks the hotel wing. He is managing partner of Dr. Ebertz & Partner group from Cologne, one of the oldest and largest independent initiators of closed- end real estate funds in Germany. In addition Ebertz was the main shareholder of Dorint AG ( today: The New Gen Hotels AG ) and shareholder other operators for hotels and retirement homes.

After seven years of peace 70 million D- Mark now been invested in a complete renovation of the hotel area. On 1 August 2001, the 4-star Hotel Dorint was able to open with 184 rooms and 315 beds, thus creating 50 new jobs. It is named after the Maritim Hotel Ulm with 287 rooms and 550 beds, the largest hotel between Munich and Stuttgart. The glazed top floor restaurant and since then is held publicly accessible observation deck the head office of radio station Classic Radio and Klassik Radio AG.

Also the owner of the living area invested 2.5 million D- Mark, among other things, a new entrance area with concierge and the largest CCTV system in a German house. Together addition, the facade was renovated.

On 13 June 2002 at 22.00 clock jumped more base - jumper from the " Association of German Property Springer " with parachutes from the hotel tower off and landed safely in the Wittelsbach Park. The approved action accompanied the opening of a marketing conference at the Dorint Hotel.
