Dornier Do 214

The Dornier Do 214 was a civilian, Configured large flying boat Dornier works.

Designed the aircraft was in 1940 on behalf of Lufthansa by a large flying boat for passenger service across the Atlantic. Since the catapult launch for passengers appeared unreasonable, the aircraft should be able to start without aid. Dornier relied in awarding contracts on previous designs such as the Dornier Do X or the Dornier Do 20

The aircraft was designed as a cantilever shoulder -wing monoplane of all-metal construction. The so-called Dornier stub for stabilization in the water were aerodynamically optimized. They were formed over the entire hull boat length as beads. Other support float were not provided. As drive eight Daimler -Benz DB 613 should serve each with 3500 hp, which in turn consisted of two Daimler- Benz DB 603 engines. Overall, 16 engines were provided. On each wing, these were two of the twin engines on the wing leading and trailing sides, each with two train - and two pressure propellers. The engines should be integrated into the very thick airfoils, where they could be reached and maintained by the two onboard mechanics during the flight. The crew should consist of twelve men: the captain, two pilots, the navigator, a radio operator aboard two mechanics, two stewards and two stewardesses and a reserve member.

The Do 214 was configured as luxury aircraft and should with similar luxury (where feasible) as the former equipped airships. As should the size of the aircraft relatively small number of passengers to be transported 40. In the two-story fuselage common room was provided on the lower floor, the top two dining rooms.

The Ministry of Aviation in 1942 stopped the development because it was a civil project at the Do 214. To work to still be able to continue, the Do 214 was converted into a military project. How should one use for the Navy, for example, take place as a flying submarine base. The following year, the project was due to the war finally ceased. Based on these considerations, the project of the Dornier Do 216 was

Made in 1940 only a reduced, manned model of the Do 214 on a scale of 1:5. The Göppingen Gö 8 as designated machine consisted entirely of wood, and was used for towing and sailing trials on the water.
