Dornier S-Ray 007

The Dornier S- Ray 007 is a two-seat amphibious aircraft from Dornier technology from Uhldingen Muhlhofen.

Development

The concept is similar to that of the Dornier Libelle of the 1920s. Originally the aircraft should also have the name Dornier Libelle, but are the naming rights in EADS as the successor of the Dornier works. The aircraft was renamed Dornier Stingray. Again for names for legal reasons, the aircraft had to be renamed before the first flight a second time and now is officially called Dornier S- Ray 007 initiator and principal of the project is Iren Dornier, grandson of Claude Dornier and owner of Dornier GmbH. The company has nothing in common with the former Dornier plant in Friedrichshafen, but many designers of the former Dornier works with the appropriate know-how involved in the project.

Typical of Dornier flying boats S- Ray 007 will therefore not support float to the surface, but merely small stub on the hull. The flying boat is a high-wing monoplane, with the one-piece wing is connected to the attached in the middle of the engine and propeller on a stable aerodynamically shaped central beam ( pylon ) to the fuselage. Due to this design, it was possible to incorporate the electrically operated Start-/Landeklappen almost the entire wing width and wing by 90 ° to bring rotatable, which facilitates the transport of the aircraft, but above all allows the S- Ray 007 stowed in one port or to park on board ships. Made is the S- Ray 007 fiber-reinforced plastics (GRP, some with CFRP reinforcements ), which makes the flying boat very resistant to salt water. It is equipped with a retractable landing gear and two tanks, each 75 liters.

First flight and flight testing

The maiden flight of the Dornier S- Ray 007 was held at the Friedrichshafen Airport on July 14, 2007. Test pilot was Gerhard Thalhammer. In the days before a water testing was conducted on Lake Constance. The other flights in the flight test are carried out by Gerhard Thalhammer.
