Dorothea Susanne of Simmern

Dorothea Susanne von der Pfalz (* November 15, 1544 in simmering, † April 8, 1592 in Weimar) was a princess of the Palatinate and by marriage Duchess of Saxe- Weimar.

Life

Dorothea Susanne was a daughter of the Elector Frederick III. of the Palatinate (1515-1576) from his marriage to Marie (1519-1567), daughter of the Margrave Casimir of Brandenburg- Kulmbach.

She married on 15 June 1560 in Heidelberg Duke Johann Wilhelm I of Saxe- Weimar ( 1530-1573 ). After marriage, the couple resided mostly in Weimar. After the death of her husband the Elector Augustus of Saxony was appointed guardian of her children, especially to taking children to the political, but the religious influence of her mother. The widow was also a new residence outside of Weimar, assigned to the so-called " New House ". Later is the Red Castle in Weimar was her widow's residence, which was erected in 1574 to 1576 for them and at the Renaissance portal alliance coat of arms Dorothea Susanne and her husband mounted. The widowed Duchess turned to writing in 1581 to her brothers Louis and John Casimir to the guardian of her eldest son, Elector August in Dresden, to promote the marriage of her eldest son with a Princess of Württemberg.

Dorothea Susanne was in the Church of St. Peter and Paul buried in Weimar; their motto was, I know that my Redeemer liveth
