Dorsal consonant
Dorsal referred to in phonetics a sound whose articulation organ of the dorsum of the tongue (Latin dorsum linguae ) is.
With the back of the tongue three different places of articulation can be reached. If it is closer to the hard palate, palatal consonants as can be created:
- [c ] voiceless palatal plosive
- [ ɟ ] voiced palatal plosive
- [ ɲ ] voiced palatal nasal
- [ ç ] voiceless palatal fricative as in German I
- [ ʝ ] voiced palatal fricative
- [j ] voiced palatal approximant as in German yes
When he approached the soft palate ( velum ) so arise velar consonants:
- [k ] voiceless velar plosive as in German short
- [g ] velar plosive voiced as in German even
- [ ŋ ] Voiced velar nasal as in German long
- [ x] voiceless velar fricative as in German high
- [ ɣ ] Voiced velar fricative
If the back of the tongue finally approached the uvula ( uvula ), so uvular consonants are produced:
- [q ] voiceless uvular plosive
- [ ɢ ] Voiced uvular plosive
- [ ɴ ] Voiced uvular nasal
- [ ʀ ] Voiced uvular Vibrant as in German raw
- [ χ ] voiceless uvular fricative as in German but
- [ ʁ ] Voiced uvular fricative as in German raw
