Dorsal nucleus of vagus nerve

The dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve is one of four cranial nerve nuclei of the tenth cranial nerve, the vagus nerve in the brainstem. It represents an important parasympathetic nucleus area

Location and microscopic structure

The core area is located in the medulla oblongata and borders there medially to the nucleus hypoglossal nerve and lateral to the nucleus of the solitary tract, with which it is also functionally linked. He also bordered dorsally to the fourth ventricle and the dorsal longitudinal fasciculus (also called contactor bundle ), which also is a functional connection. After he usually ventrally touches part of the solitary tract.

The nucleus is comprised of motor neurons, which are slightly smaller than those in the adjacent hypoglossal nucleus. In contrast to these their axons do not reach directly to the innervating region, but can be switched in ganglia on another neuron.

Function

The nucleus dorsalis nervi vagi is general viszeromotorisch as parasympathetic nucleus. He is responsible for the parasymatische influence of thoracic and abdominal organs to the Cannon -Böhm point. Is controlled by the core region via afferents from the nucleus of the solitary tract and the hypothalamus, which reach him through the dorsal longitudinal fasciculus.
