Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting

The Dortmund Chess Days ( Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting) is one of the most prestigious chess tournaments worldwide. It is considered a super-tournament FIDE and takes place every year in summer.

With the Dortmund Chess days, there is an annual invitational tournament for the Grand Master, which is one of the most populated chess tournaments of the year and is on a par with the famous tournament in Wijk aan Zee and Linares. At the same time next to the GM tournament takes place every year instead of an Open, which is open to players of all levels. In recent years, the tournament took place respectively in the Dortmund Schauspielhaus.

History

The traditional tournament was first held in 1973 by the International German Championship ( Winner: Hans -Joachim Hecht ) fought and won by Heikki Westerinen. As a result, it became more and more busy. In Dortmund previously three major tournaments were held in the years 1928, 1951 and 1961, which are considered precursors of chess days. As part of the Dortmund Chess Days also an International Women's Chess Tournament 1982 was held.

For several players in the world elite the tournament meant a start of her career: In 1991, the first time Péter Lékó part, In 1992, the then- untitled Vladimir Kramnik, the A- Open. The GM tournament in 1992 was the strongest hitherto discharged in Germany tournament. It was won by world champion Garry Kasparov, even though he lost two games ( against Gata Kamsky and Robert Hübner ). In 2005, the tournament reached the category 19, which means that the average Elo rating of the participants was about 2700. It surprisingly won for the first time a German, the young grandmaster Arkady Naiditsch, who thus far the youngest winner of the Dortmund Chess Days was. The most wins in Dortmund scored Vladimir Kramnik, who won the tournament ten times so far.

In 2006, the tournament was held until August 6 from 28 July. Among the participants were six players in the current top ten in the world rankings. Winner of the tournament was fine by rating Vladimir Kramnik, level on points with Pyotr Svidler.

2007 took the tournament from 23 June to 1 July. It played Anand, Kramnik, Məmmədyarov, Lékó, Gelfand, Naiditsch, Carlsen and Alexeyev. The average rating, amounted to 2727, so that corresponded to the Tournament of category 20 It won Kramnik with 5 points from 7 games.

In 2009 the tournament was held from 2nd to 12th July. Invited were Kramnik, Lékó, Carlsen, Yakovenko, Bacrot and Naiditsch. It won Vladimir Kramnik with 6.5 points over 10 games before Carlsen, Leko and Yakovenko, each with 5.5 points. It was Kramnik's ninth tournament win in Dortmund.

2010 was played in Dortmund city theater from the 15th to 25th of July. Participants were Kramnik, Məmmədyarov, Ponomariov, Lékó, Naiditsch and Lê Quang Liem. The average rating, was 2734th Ponomariov won with 6.5 points ahead of Lê Quang (5.5 ), Kramnik and Məmmədyarov (both 5). For the first time was the " Sofia Rule" that prohibits players draw offers to the opponent.

In 2011 the tournament was held from 21 to 31 July. Were invited Kramnik, Nakamura, Ponomariov, Giri, Lê Quang Liem and Meier. Kramnik dominated the tournament and won despite losing in the final round against the fifth-placed Nakamura with 1.5 points ahead of Lê Quang, who remained undefeated and came up with 5.5 points. It was Kramnik's tenth tournament victory in Dortmund.

In 2012 the tournament was held from 13 to 22 July. Were invited Kramnik, Caruana, Karjakin, Ponomariov, Lékó, Naiditsch, Bartel, Fridman, Meier and Gustafsson. It won Caruana with 6 points due to better classification ahead of the same point Karjakin.

2013 played from July 26 to August 4: Kramnik, Caruana, Lékó, Wang Hao, Adams, Andreikin, Naiditsch, Meier, Fridman and Khenkin. Adams won with 7 of 9 points and a performance of 2923 Elo.
