Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei

The Dortmund Actien Brewery ( DAB) is next to the Hövels brewery and the miner brewery one of the three most recent Dortmunder breweries.

History

The company was founded in 1868 by the Dortmund merchants Laurenz Fischer, Heinrich and Friedrich Mauritz together with master brewer Heinrich Herberz under the name brewery Herberz & Co.. The land they bought in 1867 for 4500 Taler. In 1872 it was renamed Dortmunder Actien Brewery.

As one of many former breweries in the city of Dortmund beer the brewery from 1879 pursued an export strategy. The DAB beer, produced from 1881 primarily as a " Dortmunder Helles " in lager brewing way, was exported to all continents. In the same year erected under the personal direction of Professor Carl von Linde one of the first he invented chillers. 1885 exceeded the annual production of 100,000 hectoliters. As one of the first German breweries DAB taught 1893 a chemical- bacteriological laboratory. And at the turn of the century, it registered an annual output of 160,000 hectoliters in 1913 even 250,000 hectoliters.

As the concentration process after the First World War, the number of breweries in Dortmund reduced from 28 to 8, the DAB has contributed to expand and acquired the Tremonia Brewery and the monastery brewery Meininghaus. By 1930, beer sales rose to 770,000 hectoliters.

After the Second World War destroyed production facilities were rebuilt. 1959 the DAB as a second brewery in the Federal Republic " hl - millionaire " and celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 1968 with an annual output of 1.6 million hectoliters.

1971 took over the Dortmund Actien Brewery majority of the shares of local rivals Dortmund Hansa and moved with the operation on 5 March 1982 in the 150 million marks expensive new building on the Steiger / Castle Wood Street, the historic site of the former Borussia and later Hansa- brewery. The seat of the brewery remained at the Rheinische Street, the historic site, known as the Brewery District by the year 1983. The purchase price was generally regarded as too high. From the financial strains, the DAB could not recover for several years. The new DAB 1984 with an annual output of 2.6 million hectoliters, the largest brewery in the Ruhr.

The 1996, buying the brands and distribution rights of the private brewery Dortmunder Kronen could not stop the downward trend. DAB in 1997 expanded its brewing capacity from 3.4 million to 4 million hectoliters. In 2001, the Supervisory Board established an indebtedness and the Frankfurt Binding Brewery secured initially by borrowing further operation.

The turnaround has not been done. In 2002, the former unitholders were carried out of minority shareholders by the Radeberger Group, which in turn is part of the Oetker Group, resigned.

On the grounds of the DAB brewery at Steiger Street, near the square Borsig, the Brewery Museum Dortmund was reopened in April 2006, which was previously housed in the private Wenkerkeller Brewery Dortmunder Kronen. At the beginning of the 20th century, stood on this site, the brewery Borussia - namesake of the famous Dortmund football club - which was later acquired by the Hansa brewery.
