Dositej Obradović

Dositej Obradovic (Serbian: Доситеј Обрадовић ) (c. 1739 Dimitrije in Čakovo ( Banat ), † April 7, 1811 in Belgrade ) was a Serbian writer, philosopher, educator, popular educator and founder of the University of Belgrade. He was among the most notable and influential figures of the Serbian people in the 18th and early 19th century.

As a young man Dimitrije Obradovic goes to the Orthodox monastery Novo Hopovo to become a monk. He takes the name of Dositej ( Dositheus ). There he comes, as he wrote later, to realize that life in the monastery is not the true purpose, which he studied, and he leaves it after three years. He begins to travel through the world and studied at German universities. As a teacher he toured Europe and Asia Minor. For three years he studied in the Ottoman Empire in Smyrna ( İzmir ) and Greek philosophy in the school of Hierotheos Dendrinos. In Vienna he remains six years and studied the German language and culture. As a language teacher, he then teaches in Vojvodina and in Moldova. Later, he enrolled in the University of Halle to continue his philosophical studies in the Francke Foundations. Only then he takes off his monk's habit forever. His studies he continued in Leipzig. Here he begins with his literary career. In 1783 he is in Leipzig out his first book " Život i priključenija " (German Life and Adventures ). Then, his travels lead him even to England and France, of which he reported in a letter novel he 1788 's " Fables " appends. In 1811 he became the first Minister of Education ' in Serbia.

Dositej Obradovic brought knowledge and ideas among the people and wanted to explain it. He argued for the use of the vernacular in literature, for the liberation of women from a humble position. However, he himself used only in " Life and Adventures " one of the Serbian civil colloquial language of the Banat adapted variety, and came back later for more Slavenoserbischen back ( Neweklowsky 1998, 10).

His most important works are: " Life and Adventures ", " fables " and " advice of common sense ." Today " Life and Adventures " with the letters original published in the " Fables " is jointly perceived as a book (Fischer 2007, 265).

The Serbian parliament declared 2007 the year of Dositej Obradovic, since 200 years ago Obradovic Serbia, returned ' was ( although it was not actually involved a return, since he was not born in Serbia but in the Banat and raised (Fischer 2007, 180) ).
